Technical Support / Re: SOLVED! - Latest software

Easy solution, just carry on using the B+...

What - and not have the one product saving feature, Audio alerts !!.

Without audio alerts which I, and many others, requested it becomes another 9 day wonder , as if you spend time looking at the screen waiting for a conflicting aircraft you are not performing your scan of the view out of the cockpit.

The same software works for both.

There's a new way of putting your licence in now (valid until next May 1st) so you have to revalidate your licence (free) and get a new key for the new software.

Doesn't for me Paul. I followed this route and have had to make do with the trial key 28days for my Pi 2.

Warning to others  who have helped over the last year or so, dont upgrade the Pi as you will not be given the new licence key to match your MAC. Only solution is to tinker with MAC address and make a pre-loader for the Pi.

And for those who have already made the investment in the Chips - (both GPS and Txpdr) what then. I think some of us who were quite well equipped already were trying to help those less well equipped (SSDR, Flexwings etc), see what was going to hit them !

Its not about the money, its the principle and I think those that helped saw it as swings and roundabouts - but now we are treated the same as those who have just joined and paid their money for the finished article - and to hell with the rest of us. Its not a good development strategy !

Yes - I think you are right Ian, it would be a nice gesture, since I suspect there will be further snags to iron out and development to continue with the support of those who have given freely of their time to help the project along. It leaves a bad taste now that I can choose to continue with my Pi B offering no further input, or utilise the Pi 2 and gladly give further feedback, especially for the enhanced features.

It does, as you say, seem odd that those that chose the Pi 2 towards the end of testing are to be allowed to continue with a complimentary licence until next year, whereas those of us in at an earlier stage are penalised.

C'est La Vie.

John
Still dissapointed.

The two new features of Audio and Mode S detection will not function on the Pi B+ and the extended beta licence will not be transferable to a Pi 2B should I already have the hardware.

Sounds a bit of a raw deal for those of us buying new Pi2 hardware, that supported and made suggestions for enhancements, to now be denied their use, just because we have bought a new Pi.  Perhaps we are of no more use as testers esp of the of the Mode S (no e.s) and audio warning enhancements.

I am not disputing its a great product....

But it was with considerable assistance from the flying community. Imagine the cost saving compared to traditional testing of  electronic products. I think it is a small price to pay for my and other input to the whole thing to get  the complimentary licence until the 1st May next year, with or without a new Pi, as promised to us all.

Little bit annoyed !

I think I am in the same  boat as the OP. I have now bought a Pi2B to get the audio and mode S bit, but because I have a new Pi then the MAC is different and the auto licenc e for beta testers assumes the same MAC address.

May I have a fresh key for my Pi2B please, or am I going to get caught for a payment despite being a beta tester and (hopefully) a useful one !

(have emailed too).

In-case there was too much for the old Pi B to manage I have ordered the Raspberry Pi 2B and hopefully this will also give me the audio warning enhancement (thanks for listening) and update to latest build.

The specific band is SRD/ISM 869.40 - 869.65 Mhz

Be interesting to know how interferance is mitigated from other users of this single slot.

Wireless audio Individual item tagging Intruder alarm systems
Assistive listening

This is a good one;-

Thanks Lee - just to summarise.

If I buy a Pi2B and connect it all up , just as my older Pi and put the latest software onto the SD card then I will get audio alerts out of the audio socket on the Pi.

I dont want to trade anything in, just buy the newer Pi from RS or Farnell or whoever.

Thanks

John

Shirly we need a Pi2B - dont we . Everything else is the same.

Would be pleased to get a yes before ordering it though.

Hopefully this gives the audio alerts and the Mode S (vanilla) display on RunwayHD.

Hi Tim, At the moment I set the altitude to 20,000ft , yes it is high, but this gives confidence that it is working if you see airliners. But we keep the antennae inside the cockpit to limit the number of received signals (a crude attenuator) . When we bring the aerial to the top of the panel, and would be similar if using external antennae, then we get perhaps 20+ returns (it is busy in the S.East) and this is when the altitude boxes start flashing on/off and we are unable to do anything on the ipad screen and our own position is not updating. Once the antennae is placed back in the footwell the returns reduce and after a short interval RunwayHD returns to normal.

Hope this helps
PS - no other apps running on iPad mini

But even with the Alt set to a low figure the NMA sentences will still have to be parsed to determine the height before discarding or keeping the data.

My guess is that the Ipad / App is just  having to service so much data on the NMEA input side (is it IRQ driven)  that it never gets back to the primary task of position and Nav plotting.

Perhaps the Ipad mini is not up to the job.

Oh that's a shame it is only on a different bit of hardware. I wonder why, perhaps speech is too mem or processor hungry, but "shirley" we could have a simple chime output on the audio built into the standard Pi to at least make us be more alert to a potential threat.

Some weeks (months) ago I was testing a previous version and found that the display on, RunwayHD, of Mode S E.S equipped aircraft (mostly airliners) seemed to overload the App and all of the altitude boxes started flashing and the screen effectively locked out any user input and the aircraft depicting our own position stayed in the same place.

I reported it on the forum and was advised to tell the RunwayHD chaps of this as  it sounded like a problem with their App. I did this and never heard any more from them and I didn't see this happen with a new version of PAW software so thought it had gone away.

Now my installation still has the 1090 aerial within the aircraft and we keep it tucked into the passenger footwell pocket , really just to reduce the number of aircraft returns that are of no interest i.e they are 10's of miles awayand we do this by attenuating the received signals on 1090 with the aerial in the footwell.

However when we bring the aerial up onto the panel and (courtesy of a blob of bluetac) stick it on the panel top, the App, again seems to get so much NMEA data streaming in it goes into this condition where the altitudes flash and the screen wont accept any input.

Does the PAW team have any technical contacts to point this flaw out to them (if it is RunwayHD's problem) becuae if it is, they dont seem to take any notice when I reported it.

John
PS how does one enable the audio output and display of non ES transponder returns ?
