Technical Support / IGRID vs Mode S 3D
« on: June 05, 2022, 02:27:50 pm »
Hi,

i have been looking through the knowledge base and was not able to find an answer unfortunately for the following questions:

1) say I use iGrid, but have Mode S3D disabled… what happens then to the MLAT aircraft that are detected by iGrid, but not by my onboard PAW? What about MLAT aircraft that detected by iGrid, but also by my onboard PAW as bearingless?

2) same as above, but I have Mode S3D enabled.. do I get it right that the system will try to plot the most accurate one?

3) last, but not least: does anybody know if SkyDemon draws circles of ambiguity for ModeS3D or it just plots an MLAT aircraft in the same way as any other?

Many thanks for any help or hints:)

Sorry, not sure what rj45 is… could you please clarify in simple terms (i tend to think I’m not a newbie user, but not familiar with quite a few very tech terms either):

1) I can plug in my iphone via a cable to paw classic and have it as a hotspot without the additional wifi dongle or any wifi use for enabling igrid?

2) if “hotspot over the cable” is not an option and my ipad has a sim, can I use just that ipad to get traffic and to be a hotspot at the same time?

Technical Support / Re: PAW Crash after takeoff

Hi Lee,

Ok I definitely had the GPS message in SD. Waiting for device - I’m not sure actually- let’s assume I never had it in the air.

Vibrations unlikely to be a factor as PAW itself is inside a bag on the back left seat.
Power also seems unlikely as it takes a while for PAW to reboot, but the drops were quite brief

It doesn’t happen every time, which makes  testing harder… so ultimately if SD card doesn’t fix it I shall buy a new unit? How could SD be an issue by the way ?

Got an installation image, but I don’t think there is much more you can do about ensuring clear sky view apart from placing it outside. I make use of the mouse magnet, so it snaps to a 2p coin:)

Come on give us a clue.

Which version of Pilot aware are you running?

Hi Ian! Sorry, might not be able to provide immediately as much as you possibly require as don't have the unit physically with me now. But some relevant info is the following:

the error on SD Was either green tab saying “GPS signal lost” or “waiting for device”. It works fine on the ground and normally happens suddenly and midflight, so ability to take screenshots is limited.

Definitely had all green on the ground in configure tab (can provide it, but only in couple days). I tried to do a track replay, but somehow that didn’t work either this particular time, so I deleted it:( below screenshot is the best I can do I’m afraid…

I am using a classic PAW I had for some years now with software version latest before 31052022 release. I use a GPS mouse  (Goes exactly on the dashboard of the PA28) and specially placed rubber bands, so that all dongles are kept tight in their slots always, so it is unlikely to be about loose connections. Device itself is “permanently installed” in a backpack (external antennas also). Could it be overheating because of sitting in a backpack pocket?

There are flights without dropouts completely. Most recent one with the screenshot had a few drops, but it restored itself quickly... there were cases though when waiting 2-3 minutes did not help and I had to switch to normal cellular connection.

Used iPadAir 4 with 14.4.2. But had similar issue in the past on other devices. Ensuring that all people onboard have their wifi networks disabled improved the matter (at least it seems so), but it does occur sometimes still.

So one device meaning same
Device was feeding internet into PAW and was being used for EFB ? Great if so

Similar happens to me occasionally too:(

So are you saying you can use only one cellular ipad both as usual as an EFB and sim from
It as a hotspot without even needing the second dongle? Or you just saying that you used two dongles, two devices and it sort of worked as expected?

I was also curious to find out if one can connect the hotspot device via a cable rather than over wifi? Anybody knows?

thank you so  much !! all clear now

oooh! Now I see. So last thing just to be sure - when PAW decides about making or not making Audio Alert or say when I see other traffic relative altitude in Skydemon - that one is though comparing received Pressure Altitude to the Pressure Altitude (not GPS altitude) measured by the PAW unit?

56
Hi Lee! Thank you for your reply. That is understood, but makes me wonder then how does it work in case of the OGN rebroadcast?

Say, I am receiving OGN rebroadcast about two aircraft 1) with PAW onboard 2) With ADS-B OUT or even Mode S MLAT. Does it mean that for 1 I will receive rebroadcast of the GPS altitude; and for 2 of the Pressure Altitude? Or are the two somehow brought together to the same datum at some point?

Or when another Aircraft (say ADS-B out) is detected by me directly and transmits PA, does that mean their transmitted altitude is compared against PAW internal Pressure Altitude (which I do not see)?

Hi,

It is commonly known that normal transponders transmit their BARO altitude on 1013 and then ATC does all the necessary conversion. Question - when PAW transmits it's position and altitude does it also do it based on 1013 BARO? Or does it transmit the actual altitude estimated by the device? The reason why I am asking as I flew on a 1022 QNH day and a colleague of mine was watching me on a plane tracking app. To our surprise the altitude we saw was spot on, which made me think PAW transmitted "correct altitude" and not on 1013. Is that right?

Interesting... and what about altitude recorded in PAW logs?

I was just always sure that somehow the baro altitude and GPS allows you to get the true altitude since with PAW in SkyDemon I always tend to see altitude super accurate when compared to my altimeter, however, when I use just my tablet GPS - then the output appears to be significantly off. But what you are saying is - I am likely seeing GPS altitude and for some reason it is very accurate (eg better receiver)?

thank you so much! so that means that in theory normal aircraft altimeters could always show correct AMSL altitude if it also had such a sensor built in without the need to input QNH? But then when airborne and travelling far away with pressure changing -how could it maintain accuracy? and basically are you saying GPS is not involved at all in PAW trying to determine the altitude?

Hi! I am also very curious re the altitude part of the question :-) Are you able to clarify pleasE?
