Technical Support / FX traffic filters not working as advertised?
« on: March 12, 2024, 03:24:57 pm »
The instructions for advance settings in the FX state “ Horizontal and Vertical Filters apply only to the RS232 output port destined for Glass cockpits without the ability to filter aircraft heights. FX will do it for them based on your input.”

However, when activated, they stop the output via Wi-Fi to SkyDemon as well. This is very obvious on test and repeatable.

This would not seem to be desirable behaviour filtering the WiFi output to SD but I would like the ability to a filter on the RS232 output ports to the glass cockpit.

Technical Support / FX data in and out - Skyview Compatible for both?
« on: February 21, 2024, 02:41:28 pm »
Looking at the FX unit as maybe worth getting as an upgrade to my Rosetta in a classic case before the rebate scheme ends. I see there is a Data in and out and Data out ports.  I currently feed traffic to my Dynon skyview and GPS from Dynon to PAW via two separate USB cables. To Dynon Skyview is specifically mentioned in the FX blurb on the site but can I use the data in to feed GPS data from my skyview in preference to the onboard FX GPS? I don't need a connection to Flarm.

Technical Support / USB output messages and iGrid
« on: January 20, 2023, 09:07:20 pm »
I have a question about the messages sent in the usb output - I'm using usb out to feed a Dynon Skyview and I'm getting intermitent errors with the dynon showing a Flarm error (it thinks the PAW feed is flarm (same protocol) as it's not clever enough to know about PAW being from across the pond). I've changed every cable in the train and the Raspberry Pi and I've now ruled out a hardware issue. It only happens when airborne and only when connected to iGrid .. I'm fairly sure its coincident with the PAW dropping and reacquiring the iGrid connection (co-incident with the colour on the radar page icon going from green to orange (though I need to do more testing to confirm this 100%) . The only thing I can think now is that when this happens PAW is sending a message in the feed through the usb connection with some sort of disconnect code that the dynon interprets as an error. It's making the system unusable - I can't use iGrid and the output to the Dynon at the same time - It's either or at the moment and I really want to use iGrid.

Does the air to air relay work without an iGrid (mobile hotspot connection)?

Can the techies here confirm my suspicion and if so is it possible to suppress this message PLEASE.. :)

Technical Support / Loading PAW onto a Raspberry Pi 4
« on: July 19, 2022, 05:49:32 pm »
I have an old Classic which I previously upgraded from a ext wifi unit to a Pi 3 with internal wifi - This has recently become highly unreliable and I've narrowed it down to the SD connector. Couldn't get a replacement Pi 3 so bought a 4. Question is should the load process be the same for the 4 as described here https://www.pilotaware.com/knowledgebase/manual-software-update - I'm not getting a wifi to connect to after stage 11 and I dont (yet) have the cable to connect to a monitor to see what it's saying.

While I’ve managed at times to get PAW to connect to both the hotspot available on my iPad and my phone it simply refuses to automatically connect to the last one used or even show either my iPad or iPhone hotspots when  first turned on. It seems to always recognise the Dynon skyview Wi-Fi bin the aircraft and the hotspot connection shown in PAW always seems to default to this. With a lot of rescanning and cache clearing and saves it will eventually maybe see one of the hotspots (iPad or iPhone) with actual GSM data available and then might connect- once connected it works great … usually until it’s turned off. It’s unusable pretty much as currently configured. Any ideas how I can get it to work and connect reliably and repeatedly and automatically?

Technical Support / iGRID - Two devices required?
« on: June 02, 2022, 06:48:03 pm »
Just picked up the email about the new software and iGRID and one thing isn't clear .. do we actually need two devices now, one with our EFB on it and another separate one to provide the hotspot for the iGRID? It kinda implies that the same device cant be used for both but doesn't seem to be actually stated.

Technical Support / USB ports losing connection
« on: May 20, 2022, 10:06:38 am »
Have an old classic permanently installed in my aircraft with gps fed in and traffic fed out via two usb to serial leads plugged in to the USB ports. Recently been getting issues with the usb connectors losing connection - a bit of a wiggle/push sorts it out for a couple of flights until it happens again but it's a real pain to get out and access the Pi to sort it so I need a more permanent solution. Is there anything that can be done with a usb connector to make it more solid or do I need to bite the bullet and buy a new Pi board? I'm not even sure if its the usb pluf to usb plug or the usb socket to board connection that is the issue  - Thanks for any suggestions.

Technical Support / Barometer Error?
« on: January 04, 2022, 11:48:11 am »
I have my Pilotaware at home on my Desk because I was seeing errors in the aircraft (it's fitted as a permanent install) - one of the errors was no 1090 Signal that I traced to a damaged aerial cable so that's easy to sort but I'm also seeing a Red signal on the barometer - both while in the aircraft and now at home too. Shouldn't the Pilotaware baro be reading correctly even without aerials and GPS connected? Not sure what I can do to troubleshoot this if it's not expected behaviour? Thanks

A friends aircraft registration was changed last Oct to G-RVNV but it's still being reported by my pilotaware (and radar360) as it's old registration as shown in the attachment. Who do they need to contact to get the lookup database updated?

Technical Support / Detected ADSB aircraft with jumpy track?
« on: July 28, 2019, 02:06:55 pm »
The aircraft on the aircrew playback is jumping backwards and forwards but it's shown as ADSB which should surely be the most accurate and reliable track information? It also appears to be flarm and is not being mlat'd - so what's making it's reported position so variable? Something doesn't seem right.
See youtube video of playback here - https://youtu.be/QzuTC5LyJOQ
Track file is here (if it helps)  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gMvS7gNiun0QYMfs9bA_u4Mvr6rFjA43/view?usp=sharing

Technical Support / Setting up a dual Wi-fi on PA?
« on: July 11, 2019, 08:38:21 am »
Wonder if any of the Raspberry Pi geeks on here can answer this question, (using a pi3+ not Rosetta if it matters) is it possible to use the internal Wi-fi as normal to create a network for tablets to connect to and then add a Wi-fi dongle to create a second Wi-fi network to connect to a device broadcasting a GPS signal. And if so how?

The issue I have is I have a permanent install in my aircraft and the gps module is located in a less than ideal position and I’ve seen the odd gps accuracy issue. However I do have a dynon skyview with a SIL 1 gps which outputs a gps feed over its own ‘skyview’ Wi-fi network. I can use this feed for EasyVFR but then can’t connect to PA. The iPad internal gps seems better than the one feeding PA and I’ve been using that but AIUI I can’t do that with sky demon. It seems if I can get PA to use the Wi-fi gps feed in place of the usb one I’ll save a lot of problems and / or rewiring the pa gps or a wired feed to the pa from the skyview.

General Discussion / Pi 3b+
« on: June 28, 2019, 08:35:42 pm »
With the new software now released can we just load it up onto a card following the instructions for the rosetta/classic and then get a new licence code for the new mac address for the new Pi? Is it that simple and will bluetooth audio work on the 3b+.
Thanks, Russ

Technical Support / Strange output experienced from new update.
« on: June 25, 2019, 01:00:37 pm »
Took the new pa software for a spin yesterday evening to try out modeS 3D but failed on that score due to having failed to enable it.. I know RTFM.. Bearingless targets were also disabled - all settings as default. BUT I got some very odd warnings which I'm sure I shouldn't have - no idea whether this is a PA issue or one for EasyVFR (I was using the latest beta version of EasyVFR 4) but I'm getting what appear to be bearingless target warnings (although bearingless targets disabled) for commercial aircraft that is literally 100's of miles away? Asking here first because it must be data that's being fed to easy vfr from PA?  The circle on the attached screenshot displayed with the reg's flashing and then went away only to reappear (with often slightly different targets) a few minutes later. Any ideas what's happening here and what I can do to stop it?
Screen shot of easyvfr4 and the associated adsb exchange historic plots of the aircraft regs giving warnings - (more in reply due to file size)

Technical Support / GPS feed from Dynon Skyview ?
« on: April 15, 2019, 01:27:40 pm »
Having got my Skyview HDX playing nicely with my permanent pilotaware install I'm wondering if there has been any work on the suggestion in a number of old posts that pilotaware would be able to use the GPS feed from the skyview in place of a separate dongle. It's working fine with the dongle but it would be nice to do away with it and would free up a usb slot for a bluetooth audio out connection (or at least powering one).  Either that or replace the pi with one with on board wifi and bluetooth when it's supported.

General Discussion / Bluetooth Audio
« on: March 28, 2019, 11:11:41 pm »
Has the update to include bluetooth audio been released yet? I'm seeing a lot of references to it's going to happen jus can't see if it has yet? If so I'll retrieve the PA from the plane and update it - if not I'll wait :) Thanks.
