With the LAS crimper shown you can alter the depth out of the adjustment range by popping a suitable bit of wire into the crimper before inserting the pin/wire to be crimped. The crimp position can also be checked by using a soft scrap of wire as a test piece before sacrificing an actual crimp pin.

It is very simple to shove a volume control and illuminated ON/OFF switch in the audio line, I have this in my (fixed) installation. An automatic one would need a bit more thinking but an airspeed operated switch should be feasible. Mobile units are not what I use so not thought about them. :)

Hi Folks, Jumping in with both feet! Does the altitude input also need to be certified? John

General Discussion / Re: FL*RM Integration - Beta Testers

I have a PowerFlarm Core with its small GPS receiver and even in my narrow valley I get sat info to my SkyDemon very shortly after the PAW completes its initial check (voice check).

I do not have a GPS dongle or any other GPS receiver linked in so the info must come through PowerFlarm?

Sometimes the PAW check out takes a few minutes to complete but this is unusual so I ignore it.

Hope this info helps

John

Ian, my PAW - PowerFlarm set up in hardware is all together and portable (on the back of the Europa cockpit 'D' panel') - just needs 12VDC, an audio 'thing' and Flarm V3 display plugging in. You can 'borrow' it for testing if you want whilst my aeroplane and me are repaired.

Re the constant repeating for Flarm traffic. In my lash up of PAW and a PowerFlarm Core I get constant traffic audio for any traffic detected when tried at Enstone this afternoon. No Flarm traffic about at all that I know off. All traffic in range were from Oxford with the 'school' callsign.

Hi Lee, I do not know right now as I have not had the time to investigate properly. I suspect that either the 'repair' at the factory has left a fault on the PowerFlarm or I have not got the data rates set up correctly. I am suspicious as the PowerFlarm display now indicates a wiring fault and I have not altered any wiring in that part of the setup. I have to do the work in 'spurts' as the valley I live in is so narrow I have to go up onto the ridge to get signals.

Beware of miss identifying pins on the Flarm rs232. I have just 'blown' my Flarm unit and have had to send it back to the factory for repairs. Got a pin number wrong!!! OOPS
I have a Power Flarm all wired into the PAW but, right now getting nowhere.

How much testing is needed? After testing a fixed station is no longer required?

Not just airfields - anywhere not actually a flight safety factor is clutter. I did not think PAW was a toy Grump Grump Grump - can the CAA give me my medical back soon and Grumps will subside  :'(

Very good option if the ground stations are set up to be as such.

Is it (could it be) a default 'manufacturers' option to set all PAW's as ground stations and only be active otherwise when the flying machines data is entered?

Is there a way I can get rid of all the clutter that could be stopping PAW doing what it was conceived for - airborne collision avoidance?

Great as these additional ideas for using PAW are they could well be a big distraction to a very busy pilot and totally the opposite of what is needed.

There are possible problems brewing with 'authorities' - especially if they intrude into CAA ATC territory with use of an illegal cheap handheld tranciever, almost into the 'Maplin Muppet' drone/laser problem areas.

Thanks for all that. I have two types of cable kicking about the workshop. Both have the same 'recommended' chipset but one is in the RS232 and the other type has it in the USB, both have fly leads at the other end. I would prefer to use the cable with the chip in the USB with the 4 ends, +, -, Data+ and Data-. I will await Ian's comments when he has seen a lead. Cheers. John

Thanks for the info but on my connectors the RS232 is Rx & Tx whilst the USB are Data+ and Data- Does it matter which way round they are connected, bothered as I managed to connect a +ve to the wrong pin on an RS232 yesterday!!!!
