Title: Newbie problem with wifi and Skydemon..
Post by: carlp on October 07, 2015, 05:14:09 pm

HI, My first attempt... well second actually

I have everything connected (hopefully correctly)
Software installed and the system booted and license code loaded ..

I can connect to the wifi as long as I am within about 1 foot of my Pi but not further?

The CollisionAware app on my ipad connects but all I see is a blank screen with the title Pilot31 CollisionAware and single 'switch' and a message saying connected? Should I see more?

If I boot up SkyDemon and select go flying with the FLARM option I get the message "Failed to establish a connection with the Butterfly Connect unit"??

All suggestions welcome, hopefully it's something silly which I am doing..

Thanks
Carl

Carl,

A few suggestions/questions:

1.  WiFi range - make sure you are using known dongle and an appropriate power supply. (search the forum for hardware known to work).
2.  The On/Off switch is all you get with Collision Aware - all other system set-ups are via the GUI http://192.168.1.1
3.  You need to enter a FLARM access code of 6000 for it to connect (input access code right at the bottom of the connections options in SkyDemon)

Try these and keep us 'posted'

Hugh

Are you near to any other WiFi Access points jamming the WiFi Frequency ?
PilotAware transmits on channel 9
(this need to be configurable)

Which USB port have you plugged the WiFi dongle into ?
I have read that the best port is the one furthest from the RJ45 Ethernet port

Thx

Setting the 6000 FLARM codes seems to have done the trick  :) I have moved the Wifi dongle to the furthest USB port and it's slightly better. I have a load of WIFI points around (!!) so that probably does not help although none on channel 9 ..
I saw one plane briefly which is a good sign but I am indoors and it's getting dark so not much traffic around here, Stansted and Luton are about 40 miles away but I probably need to stand out in the rain to pick up anything?

Thanks for all the help, so far so good

Carl

Also for the purpose of testing and seeing aircraft go into SD Setup - navigation options - Other Traffic - show within vertically = set this figure to say 40 000ft  then you will see a load more aircraft even indoors. Last few days been too overcast for any VFR stuff to catch and look at.....

Hope this helps

Setting 40000 feet certainly helps, I can see traffic lining up to land at Stansted  :)

Thanks all for help and advice..

Sounds like you have a duff dongle.

I have one of these WiFi dongles and the range is at least 12 feet (next room with doors and walls in the way).

Suggest you splash out on another one!

I have the one listed in Known Good Hardware, and have a solid WiFi connection all over the house, including upstairs.

Which version are you using of PAW, when it does not have a gps fix it should send empty packets to SD. BTW, What are your settings in skydemon for communicating to PAW

Thx

From my experience with Android devices and SkyDemon, Butterfly connect problem is usually due to not being connected to the PAW WiFi access point when hitting the GoFlying button.

If you have other WiFi access points around eg home wifi network then you Android tab might be picking this instead of PAW.

Thanks  Lee
think I ended up installing 20150919, definitely connected to Pilot Aware hotspot, run it in the car this morning on the way to work to eliminate home wifi, same error. SD key set to 6000 If there are other settings I don't know about them. I have another wifi dongle on another pi at home, I'll dig it out and give that a go this evening.

Thanks again folks

Nick.

Hi Again
tried another wifi dongle this evening still the same error, but do you have to reinstall the licence key as I notice if you change the dongle the ip address changes and if you look at the status there is no wireless key and tx/rx is turned off ?

Thank you

Nick.

Hi Nick,

Yep - everytime I've swapped wireless dongles over between the Pi units, I've had to re-enter the dongle unit license via the web interface.

I'm not a programmer, but I believe the dingle and pi unit need to be 'paired' (for want of a better description), via the license key.

Swapped the dongle again, licence key already there but no expiry date, re installed key, save, reboot, but still no expiry and tx/rx still off, presume that dongle is no good, put the original new one back expiry date back and tx/rx on but butterfly error persists, looks like I'll have to buy another dongle to prove one way or another.

when you say 'no expiry date', do you mean the value is '0' ?
If this is the case it means the license has not been entered or is incorrect.
Remember that the license is bound to the dongle, so if you change the dongle, the license becomes invalid.
I think I will change this to the MAC address of the ETH0 port, which means you can happily swap wifi dongles.

please check your license
Thx

Nick, is there a reason why you are using 20150919 ?
rather than the latest ?

How are you obtaining your GPS fix, are you using collisionAware or a GPS dongle ?

Are you connecting to iPad or Android ?

(edit)
OK, just read earlier posts, so you are on Android.
So how is PilotAware getting its GPS data ?

Can you post a screenshot of the PilotAware status page 192.168.1.1

Thx
Lee

Hi Lee
should have the screenshot attached, I was having grief copying PA to the sd card and went with the first one I had success with. I presumed possibly wrongly that the fix came from the device running skydemon as in the original hardware spec there was no mention of a gps dongle.

The wifi dongle I have in at the moment has an expiry date, it was another that I tried and put in the licence key that returned a zero.

Bet your getting fed up of this...brill job though

Nick.

Hi Nick
The problem is PAW has no gps reference.
Suggest you take a look at the android thread

Thx

You can pass a GPS fix to the PAW from the device running SkyDemon. You have to install the PilotAwareAndroid app on your device. It's available free through the Google Play store. Also see this post for instructions.

Right Guys
lets start again, Latest software installed on pi, PilotAware Android running and showing a position fix, Interface Data all looks good apart from Navigation which says off. Open skydemon and run FLARM with key set to 6000. wifi dongle is the same and came from the same place as the one listed in the known hardware section, good power supply and no other networks about. Still get the butterfly connect error ?

Tablet is the Samsung Galaxy tab 3 Android version 4.4.2

Just ordered the pressure module, and the GPS dongles are out of stock on e bay at the moment

remaining hopeful for a solution

Nick.

Hi Nick

Can you post a screenshot of the pilotaware web interface from your nav device ?
Please do this AFTER you have connected collisionaware
Simply open a web browser to 192.168.1.1

Hi Lee
screen shot attached along with shot of Pilot aware Android with location Data

Hi Nick
The problem here is that PilotAware has no Position Fix as you can see from the web statistics.
I am not familiar enough with the CollisionAwareAndroid App, hopefully Chris Mills will see this thread :-)
I think PilotAwareAndroid sends its GPS data as TCP Packets, but as you notice in the web display there are 0 GPS messages for all interfaces
Code: [Select]
TCP (Data sent from CollisionAware on iOS or CollisionAwareAndroid on Android)
UDP (Data sent from NMEAgps)
USB (Data from GPS dongle plugged into USB Ports)

Thx
Lee

Thanks Lee
I have no idea how you set tcp on the tablet, I have a garmin etrex with a rs232 to usb  adaptor would the pilot aware read that data I presume the garmin outputs a NMEA sentence.

I'll try and get hold of a USB gps dongle when they are back in stock, I have the pressure module but I'll get the thing working before I fit that.

Cheers

Nick

If you have other WiFi access points around eg home wifi network then you Android tab might be picking this instead of PAW.
This gets me every time when I'm at home playing with PAW!  :-[

You need to go to settings > Wireless and network > WiFi Settings on your Android device and select the PilotAware network connection in the Wi-Fi Networks list!

Just found this on the skydemon web site posted three days ago

"So I think I have found the issue I was having with PFLARM and SD not connecting. I just hadn't noticed that the butterfly connect code had been reset to the default of 1234 in the s/w update and there was now a new place the code under Setup->Device Connectivity Options...  "

don't know if this is the answer to my problem with butterfly connect. worth a shot me thinks..

Sorry for the late reply and it looks like problem solved.

Lee is correct in that the current PilotAwareAndroid app sends position data as P3I sentence over TCP connection.

From the images posted it looks like to Android app was working fine and connected to the correct WiFi AP. Couldn't offer an explanation but it appears a SkyDemon upgrade can upset some of the required settings.

Worth remembering for the future.
