General Discussion / USB port numbers
« on: November 02, 2015, 06:02:59 pm »
Can anyone advise the correct port numbers?
I think they go top LH - 1, top RH - 3, bottom LH - 2, bottom RH - 4. Looking at the ports. Is this correct.

Thanks Brian

General Discussion / Re: RF Test in West London
« on: October 24, 2015, 01:48:35 pm »
I'm also doing a little testing today now both my units are seeing each other!
Compared to top_pilots tests mine are pretty poor.
2 units identical build original ARF antennas JC board with ARF soldered on sma connector.
House unit powered by Samsung 2A phone charger showing 5.1V at ARF terminals, walk about unit powered by Anker13000mAh battery pack 2A outlet showing 4.86V at ARF terminals.
One unit inside house by a ground floor window, went for a walk 2nd unit couldnt see home unit at 100m! std antennas fitted.
Swapped antennas for some homemade 1/2 wave diploes for the second test.
Antenna inside house in same position as first test, went for a walk good reception until 450m away.
If i held the antenna directly infront of my body signal would drop out at this distance but would reconnect.

So results very poor compared to top_pilots :(
I had line of sight at all times but a large tree, hedge and horsebox may have been shielding a bit.
Further test later.

Raised external antenna and moved slightly now 15' above ground level, can now get a connection at approx 600m on the ground with the 1/2 wave antennas.

General Discussion / PAW units not "seeing" each other
« on: October 24, 2015, 10:33:55 am »
I have built 2 units and have carried out a small amount of testing indoors.
ADSB planes show clearly.
I have also been able to see the  aircraft symbols displayed on each unit (P3i) planes.
I am running SD on Ipad mini and Iphone all connect ok.
When testing indoors the units were about 15' apart at times a red plane (P3i) was displayed on both devices.
Now I am unable to see any P3i display.
Using the web interface I have set up master/slave logging on the ARF, I now have the units 50' apart in line of sight and have aSSRSSIS-061 aMMRSSIM-057 in the ARF logging.
Why are the 2 units not "talking" ( no P3i planes on the display)
I am running latest software and have tried rebooting ipad/phone also reinstalled software on PAW, whats gone wrong? any ideas?

Thanks Brian

I once made one of these for my flexwing, just had it tapped to the inside of the pod. It seemed to work fairly well.

Any reason not to make and use connected to the ARF?
By my calcs i think the antenna legs only need to be around 320mm.
Thoughts please!

Thanks Brian

General Discussion / Re: Quantifying the difference a USB cable can make
« on: October 11, 2015, 07:30:44 pm »
OK so went to the airfield this afternoon, before going for a  flight I checked voltage on the pins of the Pi with engine off.
Engine off battery voltage was 12.3V. With the .5m juicebitz cable was 4.87V at the Pi with the Anker 1m cable was 4.86V, so I'm reckoning with engine running the voltage across the battery will be up a little and a smaller voltage increase at the Pi.
Hopefully will work OK.

This is what I'm using  note this is not an approved item in any way! just seems to do the job.

That is the site listed as supplying known good dongles! I have replacements coming from there to replace ones already supplied from elsewhere which have the wrong chipset >:(

I'm going down the airfield shortly, will see what voltages I get when using my cheapo 12v to 5v supply!
Just thought I would run the test whilst waitying for correct wifi dongle to arrive.
These voltages were recorded with no real current draw I guess as no dongles attached.

Anker 1m long cable gives me 4.93V at the pi, jucebitz .5m cable gives me 4.94V.
Powered by the standard apple phone charger.

I ordered this Ralink - Ralink 5370 mini USB Wi-Fi adapter 150Mbps, from amazon.
Having found out that some are described as such wrongly i wanted to know what chipset was actually used.
If i install on my windows PC and do ipconfig/all  RTL8188CU wireless usb adapter shows.
Is this the actual chipset and no good?
