For completeness I thought I'd post a picture of my panel. That white space above the compass was my hope but I really can't afford to disable the compass. As you can see, I am tight for space.

You are a bit short on space!
Any chance the space to the right of the panel could be used to mount a small smartphone? Looks like a small shelf in your pic.
Similar to what, I assume, you have on the left for a radio?
It will be trial and error as to whether a smartphone in that position affects your compass or not.

In between other life demands and mulling this over I stumbled across this post from jcross: http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,807.msg10729.html#msg10729
Now that looks interesting! And JCurtis's post on page 1 of this thread suggests it should have no effect on my compass which could make the white space above viable for a display. The rest of the hardware would have to be located elsewhere, though, as others have done.

You would still need to check the compass if you put anything electronic near it, all electronics will generate some magnetics to a degree - its called EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) for a reason. Do a compass swing, put your phone there, and re-do the swing - you will soon see if you get a deflection.
