Raspberry Pi 2 Model B 1.2
« on: March 05, 2017, 09:55:30 pm »
Just thinking of upgrading my Raspberry Pi to a 2B to get the audio output and bearing-less targets.

Are there any major PilotAware-specific differences between the 2B and 2B version 1.2?

Hi Mat,

There are significant differences in the architecture of the two boards, the Pi 2 version 1.2 board in many ways reflecting developments incorporated in the later Raspberry Pi3 - which PilotAware has not yet been adapted to run on. New PilotAware software issued on 23rd February has however been specifically designed to allow PilotAware to run on either version of the Pi 2 board.

There are two other issues to consider: -

Firstly, all software released since May 2016, which you need in order to get bearingless targets and audio alerts, is designed to work ONLY on units which have a PilotAware RF transceiver Bridge board fitted. if you aren't currently running a Bridge, you need to factor the cost of a Bridge and associated antenna into your calculations.

Secondly, the PilotAware licence is linked to the MAC address of your existing computer board. If changing to a new motherboard, you would need a new licence - which comes with the Bridge board - (though if you already have a Bridge, Lee can transfer your existing licence to your new setup).

Regards

Peter

Sorry, I wasn't 100% clear. I've gone through the process of Ciseco ARF, a beta bridge board, then final bridge board which has been in the plane for a while but I never got round to upgrading the Pi when the time came. I'll get one ordered and ask Lee for a license transfer once it arrives.

I know a mate had trouble with a Pi 1.2 initially but I've now clarified it was purely a software issue before the new version came out. Might as well get the slightly newer one now I know it is supported.

Cheers.

Cheers Mat,

Yes, PilotAware certainly works fine on the V 1.2 board using the latest software. You will certainly benefit from the Mode C/S and audio alerts, plus of course the PAW to PAW interaction from your bridge. If you drop a pm to Lee with your existing and new MAC addresses once you get your new Pi installed, he can transfer the remaining period of your licence for you.

Who might that be  ;) ;)

Trust me it will work with the new board v1.2, I've been running my PAW on this new board since the end of December... If I remember correctly, if not it was certainly early January, thanks to Lee   ;D ;D
