PilotAware / FLARM / Oudie
« on: December 07, 2016, 01:50:59 pm »
I own a glider that is fitted with a Classic FLARM and a Naviter Oudie IGC (running SeeYou Mobile). I'm interested in adding PilotAware to this setup. The Oudie doesn't have WiFi, so I'd need to use the same wired connection as I use for the FLARM. I understand that I should be able to disconnect the FLARM from the Oudie, connect the FLARM to the PilotAware, then connect the PilotAware to the Oudie. As far as I can tell, no one has tried PilotAware with SeeYou Mobile, but in theory, it should work.

Could someone please confirm whether this setup ought to work in theory, or better yet has anyone tried it and found it to work in practice?

Thanks,
Dewi

I have an Oudie and had this working a while ago over a USB/RS232 interface.
Admittedly I haven't tried the
Flarm(RS232)->PilotAware->Oudie(RS232)

but in theory that should work in the same way as
Flarm(RS232)->PilotAware->XCSoar(WiFi)

Thx

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I should ask Santa for a PilotAware.

What do you select as the data output format from the PilotAware to the serial cable?

I used Dynon traffic @ 19200 baud

Does the PilotAware pass all ADS-B and P3I traffic to the serial cable, or can you select a height band that you're interested in? Our gliding club is right under an airway, and I don't want to see airlines 10,000 ft above me on my FLARM radar display.

Hi Dewi,

The altitude limit setting for display of ADS-B and P3i traffic is a function of the Nav Program you use, e.g. Both SD and Easy VFR incorporate this facility. By contrast, XC Soar doesn't, so CAT at cruising levels is displayed on the XCS radar screen and cannot at present be "filtered out". I'm not familiar with SeeYou Mobile, so you need to check whether it incorporates an altitude filter in it's Flarm interface. If not, I'm guessing the developers could easily incorporate it into the software, if you request it. I've requested this for XCS.

Edit: If SeeYou Mobile, doesn't have an altitude filter, you could always display PAW detected traffic using the "PAW Radar Display", via WiFi on your smart phone. I haven't had a chance yet to use it personally but would be very surprised if it didn't have an altitude filter facility built in.

Mode C and S relative height alerting "window" can set in the PAW Configuration page.

The PAW radar has a filter which limits how far above and below you traffic is displayed.
