Fitting PilotAware Classic ro an Xair microlight
« on: September 23, 2016, 11:38:51 am »
Hi, has anyone got experience of fitting a PilotAware to an Xair Microlight ? I'm thinking of fitting one tied into Skydeamon but wanted to see if anyone else has done this and get any advice beforehand.

Hi,

I have mine installed in a flex wing, but it shouldn't be a problem to install in an Xair. You have a metal tube frame with part plastic and part fabric covering, so no problem with screening of aerials or GPS. Do you already have SkyDemon installed? If so it should merely be a case of finding a suitable place to install your PAW (PilotAware Unit), preferably with a clear view to the front for your antennas. You might be able to cable tie the unit to one of your frame tubes. Remember to try to keep the antennas vertical, though they can be 'upside down'. The 1090MHz one has a magnet in the base, but I can't remember if the Xair tubes are steel or aluminium. You can power the unit from the aircraft if you have a reliable 5volt 2 amp supply, or from a separate battery pack. Give it a try.

If you run up against any problems come back on the forum and we'll help you out.

Regards

Peter
