In-flight testing with ADS-B aircraft
« on: October 18, 2015, 07:18:56 pm »
We flew today for the first time with PAW and in formation with an ADS-B-out equipped aircraft. A truly excellent experience, despite the slight "lash-up" of an installation for this flight (it's a glass-fibre aircraft, so I can put the PAW itself almost anywhere - in this case, velcro-tied to the central camera mount located between the seats). Coverage appeared to be excellent - note the departures from Gatwick.

Hi

Could you confirm if you performed a range test in the air with another PilotAware unit ?
If so, what range you were able to obtain. So far the best I can obtain is 4.7nm from 1000' altitude-direct line of sight to a test box mounted on a 4' high post in free space on the airfield runway.
The ADS-B side (1090MHz) of the PA works fine and is not an issue due to the higher power output of transponders.
Any information, much appreciated.

Thus far I've not knowingly been near another PilotAware unit - but I can feel a second one being purchased soon...

Thanks, be very interested if you do get a chance to see another PA unit.
