Ahh, okay, thanks Ian. It was worth asking but I'll shelve that idea then  :)

I'm refreshing our installation in the Cub and am planning something quite permanent and neat.

How likely is it that the two-receiver/two aerial option for 978/1090 will be adopted? I have no problem with this and have an opportunity now to fabricate my installation with that in mind. We're based at Redhill, where weather is available.

Thanks.

Rog,

Not necessarily 2x antennas! You can receive both 1090MHz and 978Mhz quite happily on a single antenna using a simple Y splitter at the receivers. Both are receive only so antenna length is not ‘critical’.

As the 978Mhz signals are likely to be ‘weaker’ than the 1090MHz ones, however, I would suggest using an antenna tuned for 978MHz in preference to one tuned for 1090MHz.

That's very helpful, thank you.

Still the question though... is this the route that PAW is going down, rather than timeshare on one receiver?

Thanks.

Rog,

As this function is still in development it's very difficult to say definitively which way it will end up, however it seems likely that a 'dual SDR' option will be simpler to configure and less likely to negatively affect 1090MHz traffic reception - which of course must be our priority.

As I said above, a dual SDR installation can be fitted with either a single (split) or dual (separate) antennas. FWIW, I have done limited testing (no 978MHz transmitters up here in Scotland) using a single 978MHz antenna and have seen no significant effect on 1090 Traffic reception. As I already have 5 antennas + 3 x GPS on/in my flexwing, I would probably go for a single antenna setup to keep antennas to the 'minimum'.

Peter

Thank you again Peter.
