Running and Set UP
« on: October 06, 2015, 11:39:54 am »
    Hello

    So a few questions:
    • With the GPS dongle in the PA does the Ipad running SD also use this for its GPS info or is it just PA using this ? I normally use a GNS1000 GPS unit via Bluetooth with my Ipad when flying with SD to improve GPS data.
I have extracted all the info on the zip file for PA software and copied and pasted all of that onto my SD card. Is that correct ? All works well but I suspect that when I fire up each time it goes through the full set up checks....
I want to supply my ModeS Transponder with the GPS info and the Original Build Document shows what leads to buy for this, which I now have. what do I need to do within the unit to make this happen or is it just connect the USB lead? I have attached below my trnspndr wiring info.

    Thanks
    Bryan

Also - I gather the Unit has to have the SD card in it to work even after initial set up ?

The setup only runs once, basically a self extracting binary.
Yes you must have the SD card plugged in, all the programs reside on the card

When SD uses PAW for its traffic source it also uses the PAW GPS data - I must admit, I am not sure I like this, in RunwayHD I think it still uses the internal/BT GPS, for AirNavPro and EasyVFR it is configrable.
In SD it is hardcoded, hmmm

So in summary, SD will use GPS from PAW.
if PAW is using a GPS device itself, that is the source, if it is using CollisionAware/NMEA-GPS, then it is whatever the iOS is providing

Thanks for that Lee

Straight over my head on the GPS stuff.... should I keep the GNS through bluetooth to the Ipad for SD ??

So after initial install if I was to config a separate SD card to leave in the unit, what exactly do I need on the SD card to the run PA ??

Hi Bryan,
not sure I understand the question, but let me try.

On your PC, you will format the SD card and drop the files from the PilotAware ZIP folder.
After you boot this in PAW, you do not remove, it stays there permanently, this is the system disk
for the Raspberry PI

Thx

Hi Lee

Ok I get the extract all files from the zip folder and have assumed that one copies all these and paste onto the SD card.

What wanted to check is that this is indeed correct as there is mention in the build manual about only needing to use an image file ??
Ref from your build manual: 7.1 Loading the SD Card
Download the image from the website – it is an installation Image.

Have you managed to look at the USB-RS232 stuff for input into the Mode S Transponder yet ? Both Ian F and I have the same transponder....

Ref from your build manual: 5.10.1 USB-RS232 Cables
The software running on the Raspberry Pi can generate GPS sentences on 2 of the USB
ports.
Port 3 can be supplied with pure NMEA Messages at 4800 baud
Port 3 can be supplied with pure NMEA & FLARM Messages at 57600 baud
In order to make use of this, you will require cables capable of converting USB-RS232.
The chipset known to work correctly is the PL2303 chipset, so ensure this is what you
use.
These can easily be found on eBay and AliExpress, ensure that it uses the PL2303 chipset - so I got a bunch of them

Which USB port is No:3 Please ?

Cheers
Bryan

Bryan - can we talk with each other about the Funkwerk integration ?
I've been looking at it a bit and maybe we can exchange some thoughts on it  :)

It's a bit more complex I think and also there seems to be quite a few differences between exact Transponder models.
