Ian,

The fan under the board is still in place but not powered/connected so the V2 case must be taller.  What I'm trying to work out is how I can power the fan that will be under the USB ports (the fan shown in the photo).  As mentioned, the fan shown in the photo has a USB power source but I don't have any spare ports.

Mike

There are GND and 5v pins on the bridge board, see pictures in my post here with my 3D case design: http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,1144.msg13827.html#msg13827
However - it may not be supported to solder to these!
They go direct to the Pi's GPIO 5v and GND pins however so I don't see an issue.

Many thanks for the info. Your case setup looks very interesting, let us know the final cost, I'm sure it would be far easier than trying to make up our own version.

Fitting the PilotAware into the Stratux V2 case.

Only do this if you have lots of time and are bored because the weather is preventing you from flying!  Would I do it again? probably not. I would wait for availability from http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,1144.msg13827.html#msg13827

So this is a very much abbreviated work list:

Case modified to allow PAW antenna exit.
Case modified by filing for cable access (to FLARM)
Remove excess from cable to allow FLARM cable ot fit.
File one case locating lug to allow complete case locking.
Drill 2 holes to enable clear view of lights.

One fan only under the USB ports.
Make sure the fan blows from the inside (expelling the warm air) otherwise the fan noise is excessive!

Should be soon. I now have the pillars and fans, just waiting for the pigtails and antennas to arrive.
I've also designed a version of the case with mounting lugs, for those that want a permanent mounting solution.

For all you clever clogseseses with a 3D printer, how about this beauty? I just saw it on a link from one of the SD pages and thought it quite snazzy:

I think this chap managed to pimp it a bit more and keep the fan and heat sink:

Not pretty but its now upside down with the lid is secured to the floor of my gyro and the tabs let me lift the whole box in and out as needed.    Bunch of holes drilled over the top of the ADSB USB plug and casing removed.

Works for now until someone comes up with something prettier :)

Alan,

Just be aware that with the unit 'upside down' and using the standard GPS dongle, the GPS antenna will be on the underside of the PCB - i.e. screened from the satellites, so you might have GPS issues. The dongle really needs to have the 'black printed' side of the case (or antenna side of the PCB if the case has been removed) facing towards the sky.

You might be OK, but if GPS fix proves to be a problem, try putting the GPS on a short USB cable to allow it to be turned 'right way up'.

Regards

Cheers but the paw unit itself was flipped over in the box for this very reason so its the right way up when installed :)

Other than rubbish power supply on our gyro (bought anker power pack now) it’s worked really well :)

Just shame most around me are on SkyEcho so cant see me unless the ADSB happens to work on my transponder afterall.

Hopefully makes more sense now (more ventilation now added as per above) :)

I grabbed power for my fan which is mounted in the same location by cutting off the connector and soldering the cables directly onto the PAW bridge as it has headers for both 5v and gnd coming from the pi. Not sure if this is the best way or what but hey it works  ;)
