Good question, but I think we need a definition of "best" first.
Long range means you are going to be alerted of A/C which are most likely out of your visual range
Short range may alert you as the aircraft just passes

I think the best approach is tighten the vertical filter, do you care about anything with greater than 1000ft vertical separation?

The optimum range will be dependent upon the antenna placement in your aircraft.

These settings are all personal to you, some users get annoyed of being alerted to an aircraft, but not achieving a visual, for others this is not an issue

After three hours use yesterday and today I seem to have found a good level and put it to good use 👍

What's the future for mode c/s develoment?

Recent efforts are going in to coalescing algorithms.
This is doing 2 things
1. Identifying climb/descend of mode c aircraft
2. Merging mode c returns, to mode s transponders where equivalent
